Synopsis

Finn, Jake, BMO, Marceline, and Princess Bubblegum must come together and play music every bit a 18-carat band in order to open the gate of the Door Lord and retrieve their stolen items.

Plot

The scene opens to Finn checking to meet if no one else is abode before pulling the lock of Princess Bubblegum'southward hair from the episode "To Cut a Woman's Hair" out from under the burrow. He sits down and cuddles with it until Jake comes out from backside the couch with BMO. Jake tells a startled Finn that he already knows well-nigh his "private time he spends with the wad of Princess Bubblegum'south hair." Jake so picks up a floor board and pulls out his infant coating to show Finn a special object of his own. Then a door appears and out hops a Door Lord. He snatches Finn's wad of Princess Bubblegum's pilus, BMO'southward controller, and Jake's blanket. The three follow the Door Lord through a door that leads to Princess Bubblegum's castle, where she is seen running after him and demanding that he come back, yelling "Get back here you thieving door lord! You butt!" which helps place the creature to Finn and Jake. The Door Lord so opens another portal, which Finn, Princess Bubblegum, BMO, and Jake follow through into Marceline'southward business firm. Marceline is trying to hit the Door Lord with her bass, until he opens upwards a last door that hurts Marceline with the sunlight through information technology. The group, now with Marceline, who has put on a pair of gloves and a sun lid which volition protect her from the sun, and Princess Bubblegum, go through the final door into "Red Stone Pass," chasing the Door Lord until he escapes into a double door that closes in front of the iv. Finn and then reads the words that appear on the archway that say: "This door shall yield to no command relieve for a vocal from a genuine bande."

The crew then tries making some music to tempt the doors to open using their assorted instruments, but when Marceline begins to sing about wanting to "drink the red from your (Princess Bubblegum'south) pretty pink face" Princess Bubblegum comments that her lyrics are "as well distasteful." Marceline and then replies defensively, "Oh, yous don't similar that? Or practise you merely not similar me?" Bitterly, Marceline sings I'm Only Your Problem to Princess Bubblegum, inducing shocked reactions of silence from the princess, Jake, and Finn. Since the door reacts to the truth (after realized past Finn) and the door reacted to her song, the lyrics to Marceline's rock ballad consisted of her true feelings. At the end of her song she stumbles, stammering something that is not truthful ("to...to bury you lot in the basis... and drink the claret from your... urgh!") causing the faces on the door to stop responding to the music, and to dim. Marceline then yells "Stop staring at me!"

Jake calls Princess Bubblegum and the others "talentless hacks" and leaves, only to come back again afterward (this is all part of his deed as the band'south self-proclaimed wiggle). Finn suggests that they take a noodle interruption, taking a pack of dry, uncooked noodles out of his backpack. Marceline and then starts to float off to the open up door that the Door Lord left open, and Finn says in a panic: "No! Wait--don't go too!" Thinking that Marcy has decided to leave the band likewise, simply Marceline merely tells him she is getting something to cook the noodles.

Finn continues to eat the noodles raw. Marceline comes dorsum, with a pot and a mobile stove, and tells BMO "come here baby," and hooks BMO up to oestrus the pot of water, and Finn drops his noodles into the pot. The dominicus goes down, and Marceline takes off her chapeau. When Finn suggests a song near noodles, both girls say "No!" In unison, to which they all laugh shortly afterward.

Princess Bubblegum then tries to make a new vocal, and Jake comes back. Jake says: "Close yo face, I came back for the music." After Princess Bubblegum'southward plan fails due to her "miscalculations," Marceline says that Princess Bubblegum was not every bit perfect as she had thought, and that she could not judge her anymore.

The two have a fight. Marceline then spits on Princess Bubblegum's jacket, and they all begin to go out, except for Finn, who then begins to sing a song of what his all-time friends retrieve of him. Marceline, Princess Bubblegum, and Jake join in as Finn sings about how they were all "best friends in the earth." The door, in response, opens to the Door Lord eating a sandwich in an empty room. The crew listens to his mumbling, and while Finn appears to be perplexed at them, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline, and Jake state that what the Door Lord had hoped for them to acquire, that the real treasure was their friendships. The Door Lord smiles with glee at their revelation, but then he is shortly beaten up afterward past the 5, presumably in retaliation to his thievery. Jake then passes out their stolen items. Finn receives his wad of Princess Bubblegum's pilus, where Princess Bubblegum replies, "Oh, you." and Finn mutters under his breath "Yeesh." Jake gets his babe blanket and BMO gets its controller back. A black T-shirt with what seems to exist cinnamon rolls strangling a serpent is mistaken to be Marceline's, only is claimed by Princess Bubblegum; challenge she wears it all the time equally pajamas. At the end, information technology is revealed that the Door Lord had not taken anything from Marceline, meaning Marceline merely joined them because she wanted to hang out with the group. Marceline angrily tries to deny it and transforms into her total vampire course to hunt them out of the door, only they merely laugh equally they run abroad.

Trivia

  • In the scene where Jake claims that they have "all forgotten nigh the music," Shelby is seen outside of Jake's viola and quickly crawls back in.
  • When Adam Muto pitched the episode, he had misspoken, which is the reason why Finn says, "I'll get your kid dorsum toy". The team thought information technology was funny and kept the flub for the actual episode.[citation needed]

Episode connections

  • The Door Lord looks similar to Cardinal-per from the episode "The Enchiridion!" Key-per wore a primal strapped to his head while the Door Lord wore a door.
  • In "Bad Niggling Boy," Marshall Lee and Prince Gumball are shown to accept the aforementioned type of relationship every bit Marceline and Princess Bubblegum.
  • Jake'south viola says "toots" on the back of it as seen in "Gut Grinder."
  • While Princess Bubblegum, Finn, and Jake are chasing the Door Lord in Marceline's house, the championship card music for "Hitman" plays.
  • Marceline'due south singing to Atomic number 82: "I'thou gonna beverage the cherry-red from your pretty pink face up" in I'one thousand Just Your Problem was no idle threat: she actually did this at the end of "Red Starved."
  • Finn has Princess Bubblegum's hair from the episode "To Cut a Woman's Pilus."

Cultural references

  • To create the music with BMO, Princess Bubblegum seems to use the artistic hobby of circuit bending.
  • Princess Bubblegum uses the British English term for musical beats ("quavers") as opposed to the American English term ("eighth notes"), hence Marceline's defoliation. It could also be to her simply not knowing Music Theory, since i does not necessarily need to know it in order to play (although it could make composing songs more difficult, depending on the person)
  • Besides, Princess Bubblegum'due south mention of the "mixolydian mode", with modes themselves beingness a somewhat tricky part of Music Theory to larn, would exist even more confusing
  • Princess Bubblegum's outfit resembled CJ's outfit from Regular Show's Season 5 episode, "Real Date".
  • Finn's pose when the door opens is like to a pose used by Freddie Mercury.
  • The mathematical formula Princess Bubblegum draws in the sand is called "Euler'southward identity".
  • The noodles Finn got out of his backpack were dry, uncooked instant ramen noodles.

Storyline analysis

  • The oven, range hood, and cabinets in Marceline's house are at present white instead of ruby-red, as they appeared in previous episodes. It might have been considering Marceline drank the red from them.
  • Before Marceline realizes what she is saying at the cease of the song "I'thou Just Your Problem", she is singing most wanting to make up with Princess Bubblegum even though she shouldn't, but she apace changes the lyrics. It seems that despite their rivalry, they both care for each other a lot, but they are unwilling to admit information technology. Pb too had saved the concert t-shirt that Marceline gave her.

Production notes

  • This episode was formerly titled "Door Jam."[one] It was a pun on the musical term "jam" and on "door jamb," the proper noun for the vertical part of a door'due south frame. Notwithstanding, the title was changed because the Adventure Time writers prefer not to use puns in episode titles.[2]
  • The title card was designed past Michelle Xin and painted by Martin Ansolabehere.[3]
  • In the storyboards, Jake got his pants past asking (and yelling) at Marceline to allow him borrow her pants from her home, and Marceline says she misses information technology when Jake was agape of her.
  • In the early on storyboard, Finn was using a microphone while beatboxing.

Errors

  • At the end when Princess Bubblegum is seen running away, her shirt is magenta instead of black, her ponytail holder is pink instead of purple, and her dress was purple instead of pink.

    Princess Bubblegum'south clothes modify color.

  • The instant noodle gear up and the instant noodle suddenly disappear.
  • Virtually the end of "My Best Friends in the Earth" when Marceline is floating by Jake, the acme of her bass and function of her mitt disappear backside the background.
    • When Finn is singing the line "Final nighttime was the most fun I've always had...", we come across a shot of Marceline, Bubblegum, and BMO. In the next shot it shows Bubblegum without moving sitting down on a stump and a few moments later shows the aforementioned shot as the first merely now with her sitting and the stump is included.
  • When Princess Bubblegum was walking away, she was not conveying BMO, but when Finn says "lost the piece of your hair" she is seen holding BMO, the aforementioned thing happened when Finn said "the truth" and she turned around she was not holding BMO, but when Finn continues to sing, she is holding BMO again.
  • When Marceline plugs the hotplate into BMO, the plug is two-pronged yet she puts information technology in what appears to be a single, round pigsty.
